				&lt;font face="Arial" size="2"&gt;A one hour awareness raising breakfast meeting on the unique business opportunities that laser micromachining can offer in product development and manufacture will be presented by Dr. Nadeem Rizvi of the UK Laser Micromachining Centre.&lt;/font&gt;
		&lt;/p&gt;
		&lt;p&gt;
				&lt;font face="Arial" size="2"&gt; The event will precede a 1 day workshop on 'Laser Microprocessing of Challenging Materials and Architectures' which attendees may stay on to participate in. The meeting is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government's Knowledge Exploitation Fund to promote the training and life long learning available from the MNT Academy.&lt;/font&gt;

						&lt;font size="2"&gt;Dr. Rizvi will focus on the benefits of laser micromachining for various applications. The characteristics of the main types of lasers which are used for producing micro and nano scale features will be highlighted. The talk will provide examples (including videos) of high precision laser micromachining and offer a view on upcoming developments. A brief practical guide will be provided to some of the major issues in laser micromachining: laser ablation; optics and processing methods; materials issues; processing parameters. &lt;/font&gt;

						&lt;strong&gt;Speaker Biography&lt;/strong&gt;
						&lt;br /&gt;
						&lt;font size="2"&gt;Dr. Nadeem Rizvi is co-founder and currently General Manager of the UK Laser Micromachining Centre in Bangor, North Wales. He holds a Ph.D. from Imperial College London in the field of solid-state lasers and has previously held research  positions at the Central Laser Facility of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the Institute of Optics (Madrid) and the Optoelectronics Research Centre (University of Southampton). Dr. Rizvi was previously a member of the senior technical staff at Exitech Limited from 1994-2003, where he was responsible for the development of numerous laser micromachining techniques and applications.&lt;/font&gt;
				&lt;/font&gt;

				&lt;font face="Arial" size="2"&gt;A one day conference workshop will be held at Cardiff University on July 4th 2007 to discuss recent developments in the microprocessing of challenging materials and architectures. The conference will be chaired by Professor David Barrow and topics covered will include:&lt;/font&gt;
		&lt;/p&gt;
		&lt;font face="Arial" size="2"&gt;(i) micromachining with ultrafast and short wavelength lasers of materials as diverse as fluoropolymers, sapphire, biopolymers and others; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(ii) applications in microfluidics, microptics and biosensing; &lt;/font&gt;
		&lt;p&gt;
		&lt;/p&gt;
		&lt;br /&gt;
		&lt;br /&gt;
		&lt;font face="Arial"&gt;
				&lt;font size="2"&gt;(iii) novel techniques for the creation of 3-dimensionally variable architectures. &lt;/font&gt;

						&lt;strong&gt;Facility visit&lt;/strong&gt;

						&lt;font size="2"&gt;After the workshop there will be an opportunity to visit the (i) metaFAB Industrial Open Access Xtreme Laser Facility (Hybrid Femtosecond/DUV 157nm Laser Tool) and (ii) the MEC Picosecond Laser Tool, both of which are part of the DTI NanoCentres Network.&lt;/font&gt;
